Mrs. IM decided to join Toby and me on a trip to Hensley Lake. She let me drive the Alltrack back through the country.
This is a really nice car. You can feel the difference in size and tuning from the GTI. This is the civilized, grand touring version of that package. It certainly maintains the fun factor. This is a much better driving car than the Outback or the TourX. That being said, unlike the Outback, this thing does not feel at all off-road capable. Some will want a little towing capacity, or a little more power, but this is a more nimble package for those that want it. Toby really liked the cargo area, and napped comfortably with the back seats up.
The star of the show is the DSG. Wow. I would never give up the manual in my GTI, but this transmission is truly amazing. Hands down the best auto I have driven.
Toby enjoyed exploring the lake. We ended up not playing Frisbee golf, but will likely return to play the full 18.

I know some say it’s only a tune away but VW s hould put the GTI powertrain in this from the factory . With the 4motion w ould be the perfect all round all weather car for me s ince Subaru wont do an equivalent.

I’ve only driven a DSG in a TDI Jetta, but I have to agree it’s pretty great.
It did kinda fool my brain tho. I had been using it for about half an hour when I had to make an emergency stop I tried to hit the clutch.

I missed where you got the alltrack. Congrats! Seems like a nice car and will take well to a few mods that you have yet to do to your GTI.

The DSG changes people’s mind. It sure did mine, never thought I’d have an auto, but it just works well. Glad you both are enjoying the Alltrack!

Disc. It’s Disc Golf. Frisbees are something people throw to each other. You do not want to be on the receiving end of a disc thrown at speed.
Toby looks like he’s having a good time.

I’m really curious what a mild tune will do for this. Motortrend had the Alltrack .2-.3 seconds behind the 3.6R Outback to 60, then if you look at all the other measures below 60 it’s faster. CVT strikes again it seems.

Yep, a 6 year 70,000 mile warranty is making me wonder if my next car might be a GTI instead of a Civic Hatch.....

Toby’s keeping tabs on the local wildlife, huh? Or is he just sniffing around a lot?

Barring any major financial setbacks in the next year or so , and assuming they don’t suddenly discontinue this car, I think this is going to be my next car. I’ve wanted a wagon for years, and the wagons available have been steadily becoming less wagon-like, and fewer in number, such that the VWs are the only realistic option in my price range . I’m thinking of going for a manual transmission though, just because I feel like those are becoming as rare as wagons. Assuming it lasts as long as i hope, by the end, driving a wagon with a manual transmission may end up being like riding a unicorn that has a smaller, equally rare, equally cool unicorn where it s horn should be.
